Hands On Learning
In K-12 Systems
Hands On Learning
The question that I want to research is how to incorporate more hands on digital learning in the classroom. This can be applied in K-12 systems in a multitude of different areas. With technology growing rapidly, there is an extremely high demand to incorporate new technology in the classroom. Yet, sometimes I think we fail to acknowledge how we learn. Are we learning the information or simply hearing and reading it? There is a difference between the two and I believe that hands on learning separates this barrier.
I decided to research this topic because of the school system I was enrolled in growing up. During all four years of my high school education, I attended an online educational system called K-12. This included elementary, middle, high school and duel enrollment classes. This is extremely different than any other classroom setting, yet essential for my family’s lifestyle. My mom often taught overseas and desired the whole family to travel with her. In addition my brother and I both played competitive golf. So we were constantly traveling all over the United States for various golf tournaments.
There are different modalities of learning. We do not all learn in just one format. Therefore, I believe that the classroom needs to be designed with courses that offer more than one modality. The idea of hands on digital learning is extremely important to me. Modern technology can help us to learn in such a manner. Learning through a screen was such a blessing for my lifestyle during me formative years. However, I certainly struggled at times. I believe this struggle came from myself being an extremely hands on and visual learner. Some classes like science and art incorporated our hands on activities. However, typically during an online course the majority of the learning was derived from reading and watching videos. Rarely are you involved in a true hands on learning environment. This is where hands on learning and the technical world then walk together.
Overall, I believe that if hands on learning technology was incorporated in the classroom more often than not, the K-12 system would evolve for the better. There are a plethora of students all over the world just like myself that learn best when they are learning hands on. With that being said, how do we incorporate more learning styles? I believe the administration of K-12 would be intrigued by this question and would be interested in the findings as well.
